Digital libraries are too useful to be only for the academic elite, urban areas or the well-off.
Whether you’re the parent of an elementary school student, a working mother going to college part-time or a senior citizen needing accurate medical information and access to books from your small-town home, a well-stocked national digital public library system could help you.
That said, we also believe that synergies can exist between public and academic libraries.
The latter also deserve generous funding, even though there should be separate public and academic systems (given the differences in their missions).
Easier access to e-libraries for the people with disabilities is another priority.
A national digital library endowment could help achieve all of the above goals.
